The Kyoto School (京都学派, Kyōto-gakuha) is the name given to the group of Japanese philosophers who worked at Kyoto University and had a major impact on 20th century Japanese philosophy. The Kyoto School is not a single philosophical school of thought, but rather a group of scholars who were influenced by Western philosophy and who sought to create a unique Japanese philosophy that would be relevant to the modern world. The term "Kyoto School" is also used to refer to a group of scholars who are associated with the Kyoto University Institute for Research in Humanities, and who are engaged in interdisciplinary research. For this reason, the term "New Kyoto School" is sometimes used to distinguish this group from the philosophers who are associated with the original Kyoto School. There are also other groups in various academic fields that are referred to as the "Kyoto School".
